Saint Bede Academy is hosting a 3-week international summer camp for students from various private schools from Mexico City. The camp is offering the students an opportunity to experience American culture and also sharpen their English language skills. Students are residing on campus and taking part in a number of educational and recreational activities.

Ages of the 14 students are from 9-14 years old. They are participating in a number of coordinated activities on campus, various Saint Bede sports camps and visiting local area sights. In addition, classroom instruction during the day is also an integral part of the program.

Camp Chaperones, Luz Camilia Diaz, Yara Gonzalez Cuenca and Angeles Diaz Vega from Mexico are living in the boarding houses on Saint Bede’s campus along with the students. Vega along with staff and students from Saint Bede coordinated the summer camp. Interest initiated from Vega after her son attended Saint Bede. Impressed with what Saint Bede had to offer academically as well the cross cultural opportunity for students, the idea for the summer camp began. One student participating in the summer camp will be attending Saint Bede in the fall as an international boarder student. Several of the younger student’s parents have also expressed interest to send their children to Saint Bede once they reach high school.

Several Saint Bede students and recent alumni are camp counselors and assisting with the program under the direction of the program’s coordinator, Eve Postula. “It has truly been a great experience for both our campers and our students,” stated Postula. “It is a unique opportunity for students from different cultures to learn and grow from each other.”

During the day, students attend a religion class taught by Father Ronald Margherio which includes various religious exploration activities. An ESL (English as a Second Language) class is also included in the daily schedule for the campers. Outside of the classroom, are planned outings to Echo Bluff, Starved Rock, Raging Waves, Navy Pier and Fox Valley Mall. Fourth of July will include an American tradition of a baseball game at the Peoria Chiefs Dozer Park and fireworks.

“The Saint Bede camp has been a great experience”, Vega states.  “Students have really gotten to know the school and have formed great relationships with the Saint Bede students and staff.” Already thinking about next summer, Vega would like to bring 30 students to Saint Bede and expand the program.

Saint Bede students have had the opportunity to practice their Spanish conversational language skills as well as the students from Mexico practicing their English. It has been fun to watch the interaction between the students as they not only experience developing their foreign language skills, but a better appreciation for another culture, stated Postula.
