Keeping Your Pet Healthy:  Wellness Testing

By Progress Park Veterinary Hospital | Jun 16, 2012

Wellness testing......sounds kinda silly right.  I mean, why worry about blood testing an apparently healthy pet.  Well, looks can be deceiving.  10% of pets that appear healthy to owners and veterinarians during annual physical exams are found to have hidden diseases.  Many diseases show few, if any, signs in the early stages.  Often diseases are well advanced and serious by the time an owner notices changes in their pet.  Wellness testing allows for early detection of illness when it is easier and less expensive to treat.

What does wellness testing involve?  Think of wellness testing as an internal physical exam for your pet.  Annual physical exams for pets under 8 years old and twice annual exams for pets over 8 years old are very important, but can miss early signs of disease.  Regular blood testing conducted during an annual exam is like an "internal physical exam".  This greatly improves the ability to detect early disease and improve the prognosis and overall wellbeing of your pet.

For dogs under 8 years old we recommend an annual fecal analysis, heart worm test, CBC, and mini Chemistry screen.  Dogs over 8 years old should also have a full Chemistry screen, a thyroid test, and urinalysis.

For cats under 8 years old we recommend an FIV/FeLV test for any new cat or kittens under 6 months old, an annual fecal analysis, CBC, and mini Chemistry screen.  Cats over 8 years old should also have a full Chemistry, thyroid test, and urinalysis.

We are dedicated to the long term wellbeing of your pet and want to help owners detect illness and make decisions for their pets.  If your pet hasn't had an exam in the last 12 months, call us today!
