Matt Ley's interest in Israel-Palestine began with his first visit to the region in October 2003. Since then he has returned five times to the area, for conferences and to lead groups of college students to study the issues of peace making from an interreligious perspective. His interest in the peoples of and issues affecting the region led him to write his senior thesis on Christian and Jewish perspectives on Zionism as well as participate in multiple inter-religious dialogue events between Christians, Muslims and Jews. During his studies and travels he began to notice the way religion was both underplayed and overplayed in its centrality to the issues. In the same vein he began to notice how the topic of Israel/Palestine usually was both a non-starter and taboo topic within inter-religious conversations. These trends showed both the true depth of passion people have for this place and also the importance to create open, safe space to discuss people's views on the issue.
