Violinist Rachel Barton Pine

Lucia Matos, Music Director and  Conductor of the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra (IVSO), invites you to the symphony’s final concert of the 2012-2013 season.   American violinist Rachel Barton Pine is the concerts featured soloist and is back for her fourth performance with the IVSO.  The concert will also feature Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G Minor and Serenade by Schubert. The public is invited to join the IVSO on Saturday, May 11 at 4:00pm at Ottawa High School Auditorium.  The Concert is sponsored by WCMY/WRKX Radio, Illinois Cement Company, First National Bank of Ottawa and  Season Sponsor Central Radio Group.

Rachel Barton Pine will perform Vieuxtemps Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Minor and Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saens.   Vieuxtemps Concerto No. 5 is a delight to the ear.  It’s technically brilliant violin passages are coupled with long sustained melodies couched in a conservative style.  Saint- Saens composed Introduction and Rondo for Spanish violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate who first performed the piece on April 4, 1867.  Saint-Saen’s use of the harmonic minor scale emphasizes the Spanish character of the piece.

Ms. Pine has appeared as soloist with many of the world’s most prestigious orchestras, including the Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis, Dallas, Baltimore, Montreal, Vienna, New Zealand, and Iceland Symphonies, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Israel and Scottish Chamber Orchestras.

Her sixteen critically acclaimed albums for the Cedille, Dorian, and Cacophony labels include Brahms and Joachim Violin Concertos with Carlos Kalmar and the Chicago Symphony, Scottish Fantasies with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and Beethoven and Clement Violin Concertos with José Serebrier and the Royal Philharmonic She has twice been honored as a Chicagoan of the Year and has been featured on St. Paul Sunday, Performance Today, From the Top, CBS Sunday Morning, and NBC’s Today.

A tireless ambassador for classical music, Ms. Pine is dedicated to community engagement and music education. She frequently participates in preconcert conversations, gives master classes, and presents programs in public schools. Her creative efforts to reach new audiences include appearances on rock radio stations and solo concerts in alternative venues. During this trip to the Illinois Valley, she will perform for students in Ottawa, and during past visits she has met with students in the LaSalle schools and at LaSalle-Peru Township High School.

A reception to greet soloist Rachel Barton Pine will be held in the school lobby after the concert
where she will be signing her CDs, including a new CD to be released April 30 titled “Violin Lullabies”.
