Bump-Set-Spike!

By Illinois Valley Community College | May 20, 2013

Illinois Valley Community College youth volleyball camps are scheduled for early June in the IVCC gymnasium. A Beginner Camp will meet from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday and Friday, June 6 and 7, and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 8.

Session 1 of the High School Prep Camp will meet 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, June 4 and 5, and 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 6. Session 2 meets 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, June 6 and 7, and 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8.

The camp is redesigned this year to focus on player experience rather than a grade-based approach. Beginner Camp offers basic skill development including serving, passing, setting, hitting, blocking, digging, serve receive, and game strategies. The camp is an introduction to volleyball and is recommended for ages 8 to 12 and for those from basic middle school programs.

The High School Camp is designed for players with a higher level of experience (regardless of age) including multiple years of club and/or from advanced middle school programs. Focus will be directed toward refining individual skills, running quick offenses and multiple defenses, and preparing players to be competitive in their high school programs.

The camps are facilitated by head coach Julie Sherbeyn and assistant Samantha Deters with the help of the 2013 IVCC volleyball team. Sherbeyn has over 17 years of coaching experience working with various ages and skill levels. She returns for her fifth year at IVCC with a team building off last year’s success. Sherbeyn also coaches various teams for Illinois Valley Volleyball Power (IVVP) club and serves as the club’s head coach. She provides a positive environment and skill enhancement to enable players to experience success.

Coach Deters returns for her second year as assistant after being a leader on the court for the IVCC Eagles as a player. She is currently in her third year of coaching for IVVP with both middle school and high school skill levels. She is a gifted coach and athlete and was instrumental in the success of the 2012 IVCC team.

The camps are open to girls and boys ages 8 to 15. Registration is $50 which includes 7.5 hours of instruction, a camp tee-shirt and camp certificate.

Registration forms are available at www.ivcc.edu/sherbeyn and are due by May 25 to ensure tee-shirt sizing. Late registration is accepted.
